Academic Computing Regulations
Computing is a valuable resource that is shared by the entire University community. Users are expected to behave in a responsible and ethical manner since they have access to many valuable and sensitive resources.
User's poor computing practices can adversely affect the work of others. Irresponsible use will affect the service provided to others and unethical may be a violation of the rules governing academic honesty as well as federal and state laws concerning computer crime and privacy of information.
If there is any doubt whether a particular action constitutes computer abuse, please contact the Information Technology Department (802) 485-2456 or e-mail helpdesk@norwich.edu. Some examples of computer abuse are practices such as inspecting, modifying, or copying programs or data without authorization; using facilities without proper authorization, or for purposes other than those for which authorization is given; inappropriate or interruptive use of PHONE or MAIL; or tampering with the operation of Norwich University's computer resources. Password stealing programs which reserve computer terminals are also prohibited.
The Information Technology Department has provided some degree of security against unauthorized use. However, it is impractical, if not impossible, to provide a computer system which can resist a determined violation. It should not be assumed that if something is left unprotected, it is authorized for public inspection. Using the Norwich computer systems is a privilege extended to the University community. The University retains the right of administrative control over any information stored on its systems.
